Reporting to the Director of the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, the incumbent will provide leadership for the overall operation and administration of the University Archives and Records Management Service. The University Archivist is responsible for the appraisal, acquisition, preservation and use of University records of permanent value and the private records of individuals and organizations associated with the University. The position also has responsibility for developing, promoting and implementing an effective and integrated records management program that meets the University’s current and future records and information management needs and current and future legal requirements. This position will be responsible for making recommendations on digital preservation for both the archives own operation and the university wide records management program, including records that have been originally created in a digital format.
The University Archivist will work closely with the Director of Library Information Technology Services and others to create a state-of-the-art program for management and preservation of “born digital” electronic archives. The University Archivist will develop a coordinated program of outreach and instruction to the university community to enhance awareness and use of the archival records for both research, teaching and administrative purposes. The University Archivist will lead a team of professional and support staff and will undertake administrative and managerial duties to ensure the efficient functioning of the unit. The University Archivist will work closely with the Director of the Fisher Library in order to develop integrated services, where possible, between the Rare Book Library and University Archives and Records Management Service. The archivist will also work closely with Senior Staff in the Robarts Library system and librarians and others in the many independent libraries and archives at the University of Toronto with an interest in preservation and accessibility of university history. Additionally, the archivist will collaborate with other units throughout the university on archive-related projects.
Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have:
- A Masters degree in Archival Science (MAS), or a Master of Information Studies (MIS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) (or equivalent) from an ALA accredited institution.
- A minimum of five years experience as a working archivist and familiarity with the ways in which records are created, used and administered within a University context.
- Demonstrated knowledge of records management principles and practices.
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with diverse constituencies including donors, university administrators, researchers and members of the public.
- Excellent organizational, time management and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively and creatively in a collaborative service-oriented environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
The successful candidate will preferably have:
- Recognized leadership in the field of archival management and practice; a record of publications and teaching experience.
- Familiarity with Canadian and Ontario legal and regulatory requirements and the ability to direct activities in a context which involves legal areas such as privacy, copyright, and access to information.
Salary and Terms of Appointment:
Salary and appointment level are based on experience and qualifications. It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the Librarian III level, subject to review.
Librarian III: $73,800.00 (minimum)
This is a permanent status stream position.
