Description and Duties: The City of Edmonton Archives is looking for a motivated, energetic and self-starting summer student who is interested in learning about archives. 

In a supportive and supervised environment, you will gain practical experience in important aspects of archival work through processing, preserving, and making accessible archival records. Reporting to the Supervising Archivist, you will complete some projects and experience a range of archival tasks. This is an ideal position for a graduate student enrolled in a Master of Information Studies with a specialization in Archival Studies or a related field (undergraduate students are eligible and encouraged to apply as well). 

The student will get to attend and contribute to archives staff meetings, job-shadow archivists on the reference desk, and contribute to the following projects: 

The first set of projects involve completing the arrangement, processing and description of three Community League Fonds, taking them from unprocessed accessions to completed fonds with a finding aid made available on our Access to Memory Database. These collections include textual paper records, photographs, books, and machine readable records, and will involve removing duplicates, rehousing in acid free file folders, assisting with the processing of machine readable records, digitizing photographs, and creating a file list and description of the records. 

The other project involves working to complete a survey of our accessions backlog and helping the archives select the priorities for processing in the future.

As a part of the team, you will:

  • Physically arranging and describing bodies of records 
  • Assist with collections management
  • Assist with digitization
  • Assist with reference service

Qualifications: 

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary undergraduate or graduate degree, in an archival studies, information management, library science, history, or related program, and returning to school full-time in September 2026
  • Experience using Google Workspace applications or equivalent programs

Assets:

  • Experience in archives or related field 
  • Experience with Universal Design
  • Experience using Adobe Suite, scanning software or equivalent
  • Enrollment in a Masters of Information Studies with a specialization in Archival Studies
  • Familiarity with legacy media including VHS, Floppy Disks and/or Optical Disks 

Skills Required for Success:

  • Familiarity with history and archives 
  • Familiarity with Archival standards such as the Rules for Archival Description
  • Problem-solving abilities, including critical thinking and planning skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organization skills

  • are a high school, college, CEGEP or university student.

Note: Priority will be given to students who have not previously participated in the Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations employment program.
