Description and Duties: The Archivist preserves the official records and helps tell the story of The Anglican Church of Canada and its communities.

  • The Archives have become increasingly important to Indigenous, rural, northern, faith-based, and other widely distributed communities across Canada. The archive contains items from the history of The Anglican Church of Canada over the past 500 years and will continue to acquire and share items in a variety of formats. Accessibility of records related to residential schools and the impact on Indigenous people and communities are a special focus of the archive.
  • The successful candidate will have experience and ideally leadership responsibilities in many of the areas below.
  • Manage the archives through effective acquisition, preservation, accessibility of the collection.
  • Provide technical and administrative support to ensure the archives continue to develop in areas such as policy development and implementation, adherence to cataloguing systems, and accessibility to individuals and communities.
  • Develop collection development priorities and facilitate the transfer of historically significant records.
  • Ensure sound environmental conditions for collections and develop strategies to conserve fragile and at-risk materials. Develop and maintain disaster preparedness and recovery plans. Develop and execute plans for moving the contents of the archive.
  • Oversee digitization initiatives to improve access and preservation. Support the organization in the management of permanent and temporary electronic records.
  • Respond to archival inquiries and facilitate access to the collections.
  • Conduct historical research and provide information to support activities such as academic research, genealogical searches, publications, special projects and the work of healing and reconciliation. Prepare exhibits, presentations and educational materials.
  • Engage with partners such as The Canadian Church Historical Society, Indigenous communities, historians, academic institutions, museums, libraries and other archival organizations.

Qualifications: 

  • Masters degree in Archival Studies preferred. Degrees in Library Science, Information Science or Records Management will be considered with significant archival experience.

  • Significant archival experience in the areas described above.

  • Additional experience or knowledge that would be helpful includes:

  • Confidentiality, privacy legislation, copyright, and access to information requirements.

  • Residential schools and the involvement of Indigenous people in The Anglican Church of Canada

  • Anglican history, governance, and ecclesiastical records management.

  • Management or participation in moving the location of an archive.

  • Work is generally done in office and storage environments. Limited opportunities for hybrid work due to public access of the archive.

  • Regular lifting and carrying of materials up to 30 lbs / 13.5kgs
