The Geraldine Grace and Maurice Alvin McWatters Visiting Fellowship

Queen’s University Archives is issuing a final call to invite interested individuals to submit applications for the Geraldine Grace and Maurice Alvin McWatters Visiting Fellowship for 2024-2025. The Fellowship allows the successful candidate to spend a month on-site in Kingston, Ontario, Canada undertaking research using the rich and varied holdings of Queen’s University Archives. The Fellowship Honorarium ($5000 CDN) will assist in defraying costs such as accommodation, travel, and research expenses. The deadline for submission of this year’s application is 27 September 2024. In honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre invites and encourages all to watch their short documentary film titled “A Cup of Cold Water.”

This moving documentary, produced by the amazing folks at the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre (MFNERC), looks at the years of advocacy work undertaken by Alfred J. Kirkness in the 1960s and 70s when he lobbied various levels of Manitoba government to take responsibility for the care of the multiple unmarked graves at the Brandon Residential School. His persistent letter writing campaign was rediscovered through the detailed archival research efforts of Archivists Anne Lindsay and David Cuthbert and has more recently been used by the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation to locate and identify the children who lost their lives while in the care of the Brandon Residential School.

Bridging the Gap – The Current State of Historical Societies in Canada

In the context of the 100^th anniversary of the Canadian Historical Association (CHA) in 2022, and in the wake of the research project Agents mémoriels, un engagement d’hier à aujourd’hui, the CHA and the Fédération Histoire Québec (FHQ) took the opportunity to launch exchanges on the shared contribution to historical knowledge of the various historical societies in Canada.

A first webinar, bringing together seven organizations, took place in February 2023. At a follow-up meeting in May 2023, it was agreed to produce a current state of historical societies in Canada.  A steering committee made up of the CHA, the FHQ, the Institut d’histoire de l’Amérique française (IHAF) and the British Columbia Historical Federation (BCFHS) was then set up to coordinate its production.

Published digitally in June 2024, the report presents data from a survey of 14 Canadian historical societies, both professional and citizen-based, pan-Canadian as well as provincial and territorial. In addition to overall observations, the report presents responses according to five themes:

1. Mission, objectives and organizational history
2. Organizational life
3. Achievements
4. Collaborations
5. Challenges and outlook

The report was the subject of a presentation at the Canadian Historical Association’s annual meeting in Montreal in June 2024, a recording of which can be found on the CHA’s YouTube channel.

It highlights global efforts, including conferences, policy developments, educational programs, and community projects. 

The proposal advocates for an Indigenous-led resolution at the United Nations to establish an International Convention on Indigenous Languages. This legally binding convention would aim to ensure legal protection, mobilize resources, integrate Indigenous languages into educational systems, and preserve cultural heritage.

The Government of Canada is looking for candidates to become representatives of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (the Board). A national campaign was launched to create a pool of qualified candidates for all provinces and territories while prioritizing Manitoba where the position of representative is currently vacant. Candidates from other provinces and territories may be added to a roster of qualified candidates for future vacancies.

We encourage candidates to apply now. Submitted applications will be evaluated from August 27, 2024.

The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada is responsible for advising the Minister responsible for  Parks Canada on the designation of places, persons and events that have marked and shaped the history of Canada.

The Board is made up of one representative from each province and territory, as well as one representative from Library and Archives Canada, the Canadian Museum of History and the Parks Canada Agency. A member of the Board must reside in the province or territory they represent. They must also be willing to:

• take part in the evaluation process and make recommendations to the Minister who has the authority to designate sites, events or persons of national historic significance;
• advise the Minister on the Heritage Railway Stations Program, the National Program for the Grave Sites of Canadian Prime Ministers and the Heritage Lighthouses of Canada Program;
• participate in Full Board meetings held twice a year and ‘as and when required’ in relation to the Board’s committees;
• communicate the Board position on specific heritage issues at public meetings, interviews with media, and in communications with groups and individuals;
• serve as Master of Ceremonies at Board commemorative plaque unveiling ceremonies and represent the Board at other events when requested to do so; and
• monitor heritage issues or initiatives within your province or territory and provide advice to Parks Canada officials and the Board on such matters as required.

As the custodian of the documentary heritage of Saskatchewan, the Archives connects with the public, organizations, and government to make the provinces’ rich collections engaging and accessible through online and in-person discovery.

As you may be aware, the Philippines was recently hit with a serious typhoon that has put Manila in a state of calamity. While the Philippines frequently experiences typhoons, Typhoon Carina is unique for its serious devastation, and the vulnerability of Philippine infrastructure caused by recent years of government neglect and intensifying resource extraction in the country (including by Canadian mining companies). The Philippine Libraries Association Inc. is collecting donations to support librarians, archivists, and other information professionals in the Philippines impacted by Typhoon Carina. They have a Google form for donors. I kindly request that you share this link and the BAYAN Canada social media post in your networks.

The Association of Canadian Archivists is pleased to announce the launch of a Call for Submissions for the ACA 50^th Anniversary logo. This logo will be used by the Association during the ACA’s 50^th anniversary celebrations in 2025. The logo will mainly be used online (website, Scope and Content, and social media) with some potential use in print. There are no existing brand elements that must be included in the logo.  

Submission: Please send your submission to Dr. Gillian I. Leitch, Executive Director, at Executive.Director@archivists.ca. Include your name, email address, a short paragraph about your design,your preferred Creative Commons license option (recommended: CC BY-ND 4.0),and your 50^th anniversary logo. 

Technical requirements: Dimensions of the logo should be 1600x1600 pixels and submitted in PNG format.  

Deadline for submissions: Sunday, October 20, 2024 

Determination of Winner: The Association of Canadian Archivists Board of Directors will review the submissions and select logos for the contest.Association of Canadian Archivists Members will electronically vote to select the winning logo. In the event of a tie, the Association of Canadian Archivists Board of Directors will determine the winner. 

The winning submission will be awarded a free one-year membership to the Association of Canadian Archivists. Only one prize is available. There is no monetary compensation for creating or putting forward a submission for this call.
